“Simple Abundance: A daybook of comfort and joy” by Sarah Ban Breathnach is one of the best books that I have ever come across. It teaches about finding abundance in simplicity. This book has opened my eyes to things that I had never thought of before. Reading this book is a lot like watching the “Secret”. It opens your eyes. You get to see things for the first time, things that have always been right in front of you but you were just blind to them.

This books aims at showing people how to be happy. The antidotes given are simple and will make you go like “Aha!” You will be surprised to find out that you already had the key to your own happiness. It is not a self-help book but just a simple and fascinating read that will give you a whole new perspective on simple abundance.

One of the main things that I learned from the book is about gratitude. Sarah explains that most of the times, we are unhappy because we focus on the negative things in our lives. We often focus on what we don’t have, instead of what we have. For instance, when going through a breakup, one is more likely to focus on the pain of lost love and dwell in misery. At this point, it may be hard to focus on other things such as the fact that they still have a good family, a stable job, good health and even simply the gift of life. If you shift your focus from what you lack and instead start to think of everything that you have, you will realize that you have a lot to be thankful for.

In this book, Sarah encourages readers to start keeping a gratitude journal. Every evening, one is supposed to take out the journal and simply list only five things that they are grateful for. This could be major things such as passing an exam, getting a new job, finding love or something of that magnitude. It could also be simple things such as being able to write an article, mastering a new recipe or even getting your hair done. On days when you feel low, you can then list down routine things such as, having a house, a bed to sleep in, clothes, a good family and anything else in your life that you may be taking for granted. The thing is, there is always something to be grateful for.

Once you start keeping the gratitude journal, you will realize that you have everything that you need to be happy. This will give a positive shift to your life making you happier.

According to Sarah, we do have everything that we need to be happy. However, we spend most of our lives focusing on what we think we “want” in order to be happy. You may think a car or a bigger house or a better job is what it will take to get you happy, all the while, the fact that you are alive and can dream, should be enough to get you happy.

Today, start your gratitude journal. As the hymn goes “Count your blessing, name them one by one……..and it will surprise you what the Lord has done”.
