Recently Finished
Over the weekend, I read two books on a whim. They were not really on my TBR but I just picked them randomly.
Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurtson
I have watched the movie adaptation of this book but only got to read the book recently. I loved the book though I really struggled with the dialect used in the dialogues. It was a beautiful book but tragic.
The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd
This has to be one of the best books that I have read recently. It tells the story of slavery and the fight towards its abolition. It had everything that I like in a book. I especially liked the fact that it has strong female protagonists.
Currently Reading
I am finally reading Beloved by Toni Morrison.

It has been a rather weird experience. I don’t know why I assumed that the book was about civil rights. Imagine my shock when the first thing I came across was the ghost of the baby haunting 124. The throwing of things around, the resurrection of Beloved are not things that I expected. Honestly speaking, I have always been scared of the supernatural especially anything ghostly. Furthermore, for the first time in years I had a nightmare on Monday night and woke up too scared to go back to sleep. Beloved, the resurrected woman was the star in my nightmare although in the nightmare she looked and walked like the girl from the movie, The Ring. This is definitely not a book that I would have picked on my own. It was a challenge by my book club so I will read it to the end. I look forward to finding out how it goes. In addition, the book won some awards and is said to have been the book that contributed to Toni’s Nobel Prize award. So I am soldiering on. Hopefully, there will be no more nightmares about ghosts. 
By the way, I read somewhere that the book was inspired by a real story about a mother who had to kill her baby to save her from slavery.
The Secret We’re Keeping by Rebecca Done
I stumbled upon this book. When I woke up from the nightmare mentioned above(the Beloved experience), I decided to read something light before sleeping again and this is the book that I found nearest to me. It is a book about a taboo topic, teacher-student relationship. I have never read anything like it so just taking time to see how the story unfolds.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
It’s about time that I finely read this widely acclaimed classic.

A Haven for Book Lovers 
I don’t think Beloved gave me nightmares, but it did leave a deep impression. I still remember the bits describing the conditions onboard the slave ships. Horrific. I hope you can continue to the end and your book club discussion is interesting. It’ll be interesting to hear if any of the other group members had nightmares/dreams too.
I can barely remember To Kill a Mockingbird I read it so long ago. I really should re-read it.

I think the horrors of how the baby died contributed to the nightmare. However, I will keep reading it and yeah can’t wait to hear what the other book club members thought about the book. TKAM has such good reviews, I have had it on my TBR pile for a while now. Hope you enjoy it if you get a chance to re-read it. Happy reading 🙂

This Secret We’re Keeping sounds amazing. Heavy topic. I hope you enjoy To Kill a Mockingbird. It was one of my favorites growing up. I will have to give it a reread soon.

It seems like everyone has read TKAM and liked it. I am really excited about reading it next. I am half-way through This Secret We’re Keeping. I have never read anything that featured a student-teachers relations so some bits are very uncomfortable to read but its an intriguing book.
It’s good to hear you really enjoyed The Invention Of Wings! I have been wanting to get a copy for a while now… And To Kill A Mockingbird is without doubt a very interesting read. I hope you enjoy your books this week! 🙂
Thanks Yvo. The Invention of Wings is such a great book. I hope you will enjoy it once you get your copy. TKAM sounds really good. Everyone seems to have liked it so much. I am even tempted to stop what I am reading and just get to it. I hope to like it as much as everyone seems to.
I remember attending my US literature class and being confused at the plot of Beloved, it was definitely not what I had expected (it did not help that they’d decided to change the mandatory lecture the same day the class was held, I had prepared A Streetcar Named Desire…). I’m intrigued at The Secret We’re Keeping, I’ll wait for your thoughts about it before adding it to my TBR. I know I should read To Kill a Mockingbird, but I don’t feel like dragging myself into classics again.

I think Beloved takes sometime to get used to especially if you have no prior knowledge of the book before picking it. I am almost through with The Secret We’re Keeping so I will share my thoughts about it soon. At least, I know someone else who hasn’t read TKAM 🙂

The Secret We’re Keeping looks so intriguing. I don’t know if I’d struggle with it because I am a teacher. I hope you enjoy these books.
It is intriguing but to be honest, some sections of it make me so uncomfortable.So I think it may be a difficult read for you given your profession but perhaps take a look at the synopsis and see if you can read it
Toni Morrison is one of my favorite writers, but I haven’t read all of her books yet. Beloved is one that sits on my shelf untouched. Love the movie though. To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my all time favorite books. I have 5 different covers on my shelf that I’ve read about 15-20 times since I was 14. Hope you love it!
I am now really looking forward to reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Its sounds like quite an interesting book based on all the comments and recommendations. Beloved is my first book by Toni Morrison although I also have Bluest Eye on my bookshelf. Beloved was unexpected but its an interesting book though quite horrific.
