A Haven for Book Lovers

I am just a girl who loves reading and talking about books

Last Breath by Robert Bryndza

Last BreathAbout the Book

He’s your perfect date. You’re his next victim. When the tortured body of a young woman is found in a dumpster, her eyes swollen shut and her clothes soaked with blood, Detective Erika Foster is one of the first at the crime scene. The trouble is, this time, it’s not her case.

While she fights to secure her place on the investigation team, Erika can’t help but get involved and quickly finds a link to the unsolved murder of a woman four months earlier. Dumped in a similar location, both women have identical wounds – a fatal incision to their femoral artery.

Stalking his victims online, the killer is preying on young pretty women using a fake identity. How will Erika catch a murderer who doesn’t seem to exist? Then another girl is abducted while waiting for a date. Erika and her team must get to her before she becomes another dead victim, and, come face to face with a terrifyingly sadistic individual.

Last Breath by Robert Bryndza is the fourth book in the DCI Erika Foster series. This is my favorite crime thriller series and I am just in awe of the author. Bryndza is brilliant and I am totally hooked to this series. His books seem to be getting better which each new release. Seriously, everyone should read this series!

The story revolves around a series of gruesome murders. Young, beautiful women are being found dead in dumpsters. The only connection between them is a guy that they met online. The killer is introduced in the first chapters. You may wonder how the story proceeds if the killer is known from the start. What Bryndza did so brilliantly is to give the two perspectives concurrently. The killer goes about the crime spree as the investigation proceeds before the two inevitably collide. I kept waiting for the villain to be caught and it was interesting to see how the detectives were able to solve the mystery as the dots connected.

As always, the characterization was on point. DCI Erika is back and I liked her much more than in the last book. She is still tough but we get to see her other side more in this book. The character development through the series is just amazing. It feels like I am getting to know Erika better. The more I know her, the more I like her. Moss, Isaac and Peter are also back. This group is just awesome. I like their friendship and love seeing them work together.

There is a lot that goes on in the story. Erika has a few issues to sort out at work and in her own life. At the same time, the body count goes up. The killer managed to keep the cops guessing with very few clues left behind. I kept waiting for the villain to mess up but it seemed like it wasn’t happening. This kept me up last night up to 2:00am. The killer had to mess up and I couldn’t sleep until I saw how it would all end. I also liked the online angle. Cyber crime seems to be gaining popularity as technology evolves and it was interesting to see the author explore the use of social media in this mystery.

Last Breath by Robert Bryndza is my favorite book in the series so far. I have a feeling that the next book will soon be my favorite one because as I said, the books just keep getting better. This book has everything from a memorable villain to an awesome investigation team and mysterious murders. It was an addictive read from the first to the last page. I can’t wait to see how the series progresses.

I feel like everyone who hasn’t read this series is missing out on great crime thrillers. Although the books can be read as standalones, I think it is better to read them in order so that you can understand the relationships and the detectives’ history. Take a look at the other gems in the series. Click on the titles to read my reviews of each.

gIRL IN THE ICEThe Girl in the Ice

Her eyes are wide open. Her lips parted as if to speak. Her dead body frozen in the ice…She is not the only one.  When a young boy discovers the body of a woman beneath a thick sheet of ice in a South London park, Detective Erika Foster is called in to lead the murder investigation.

The victim, a beautiful young socialite, appeared to have the perfect life. Yet when Erika begins to dig deeper, she starts to connect the dots between the murder and the killings of three prostitutes, all found strangled, hands bound and dumped in water around London.

What dark secrets is the girl in the ice hiding?
As Erika inches closer to uncovering the truth, the killer is closing in on Erika. The last investigation Erika led went badly wrong… resulting in the death of her husband. With her career hanging by a thread, Erika must now battle her own personal demons as well as a killer more deadly than any she’s faced before. But will she get to him before he strikes again?

StalkerThe Night Stalker

If the Night Stalker is watching, you’re already dead…

In the dead of a swelteringly hot summer’s night, Detective Erika Foster is called to a murder scene. The victim, a doctor, is found suffocated in bed. His wrists are bound and his eyes bulging through a clear plastic bag tied tight over his head.

A few days later, another victim is found dead, in exactly the same circumstances. As Erika and her team start digging deeper, they discover a calculated serial killer – stalking their victims before choosing the right moment to strike.

The victims are all single men, with very private lives. Why are their pasts shrouded in secrecy? And what links them to the killer?

As a heat wave descends upon London, Erika will do everything to stop the Night Stalker before the body count rises, even if it means risking her job. But the victims might not be the only ones being watched… Erika’s own life could be on the line.

dark-waterDark Water

When Detective Erika Foster receives a tip-off that key evidence for a major narcotics case was stashed in a disused quarry on the outskirts of London, she orders for it to be searched. From the thick sludge the drugs are recovered, but so is the skeleton of a young child.

The remains are quickly identified as seven-year-old Jessica Collins. The missing girl who made headline news twenty-six years ago. As Erika tries to piece together new evidence with the old, she must dig deeper and find out more about the fractured Collins family and the original detective, Amanda Baker. A woman plagued by her failure to find Jessica. Erika soon realises this is going to be one of the most complex and demanding cases she has ever taken on.

Trust me, they are all wonderful reads so don’t even think about it. Just get all the books and as we like to say in Kenya, just do it and thank me later. Happy reading!

I’m not familiar with this author, Diana, but your enthusiasm speaks well of him! My library (wjhere I work) doesn’t appear to have these but I’ll keep a lookout for them – I’ll check the library system where I live as well. I’m glad that he keeps getting better – it’s so great when you can find a series that improves with each book!

I work at a public library, so I’m surrounded by books all day – and have access to all the books in the other branches in the county. It’s a wonderful treat – I am spoiled by the easy access! I’m glad you have a workplace library!

I had to laugh when you say you stayed up to 2AM because you had to know how it ends heheh… this book definitely sounds interesting to read. I do like the cyber crimes angle too. I think I noticed Dark Waters on NetGalley before. Are these books connected by a character in the series or are they individual? Hopefully I’m making sense.. each book has a killer that eventually caught or it drags on to the next book in the series? It’s such a good book to read when you keep on hoping the killer messed up somehow but he didn’t.. Excellent review Diana! I think I’m falling for another book due to your review 🙂

No, each book deals with a new case. Dark Waters was a bout a cold case and this one cyber crime. They are all different. The only similarity between them is the investigation team. The four characters that I mentioned in the review are the same from the first book. I hope that you will decide to read this series some day. It is good 🙂

Will you start with the 5th book?I wish you were in a position to start with the first one because of the investigation team so that you can get to know them.If you can’t get the first one then don’t worry. This is a pretty interesting book and it can still be read as a standalone. If you like it then you can read the whole series.Let me know if you have any questions about the detectives. We can discuss the book once you are done 🙂
