Review: Keep You Safe by Rona Halsall

keep you safeWhat if trying to protect your child only put them in danger?

Natalie is desperate to find her little boy. It has been more than three years since she saw Harry. Three long years in prison for a crime she knows she didn’t commit.

But her husband believed the police, and took their son.

Who has gone to such great lengths to destroy Natalie’s life? Everyone she once trusted – friends, family, everyone close to her – what secrets do they hide?

If Natalie finds the truth, will she get Harry back, or lose him forever?

Review

In Keep You Safe by Rona Halsall, Natalie is trying to find her son, Harry. She has been in prison for years and lastly saw her son when he was just a few months old.  Keeping him away is her estranged husband, Tom, and some bad people chasing her.

This story is narrated through alternating timelines. My favorite timeline was the one following Natalie’s arrest and imprisonment. I was curious about her crimes. I am always intrigued by stories set in prison so her incarceration also interested me. This prison was quite different though.  It kinda sounded like an okay place, well apart from being locked down and the not so nice inmates. The present timeline follows Natalie as she searches for her son. There were quite a number of tense moments especially involving Natalie being stalked.

This was a good read and I enjoyed Rona’s writing. Having read many thrillers before, I quickly guessed the identity of the baddie hence the reveal wasn’t surprising. However, I didn’t predict their motives or a number of the other twists in the story. There were also a few chilling chapters that were narrated by a mysterious character. These were intense and I found myself looking forward to them.

Through this story, I also discovered the Isle of Man. I had never heard of this place before. Not even in passing or in a movie.  It provided an interesting setting for this thriller. The Coastal location also added more tension to some of the scenes. This was an interesting, well-written thriller with a unique setting.

  1. I enjoyed this one too Diana! Also thought the prison chapters were interesting. The ending quite shocked me. Great review!

    1. It really is. I don’t know how I have never even heard of it before this book. Most thrillers set in the UK talk of Cornwall when using island locations. Isle of Man was unique. Thank you, Nikola 🙂

    1. I Googled Isle of Man after reading the book. Its between England and Ireland, small kingdom with about 80,000 citizens, the people are called Manx. I think its a really interesting place and it definitely was a great location for this thriller. Thanks Jennifer 🙂

    1. Thanks Annie. Isle of Man was totally new to me but having read about it a bit now, I think I’d want to go there. It was an interesting setting.

  2. Ha! A pleasant prison! I think i remember reading somewhere about prisons in the Nordic countries and how they are not totally awful places and they actually try to make the inmates feel good etc…
This story sounds pretty cool. I think it’s interesting to see what happens after someone is released from prison and how their life might have fallen apart while they were in.
I’m also planning to the Isle of Man since forever, but so far have not managed to get there. At least i could take a fictional trip there 😀
    Great review!

    1. Isle of Man sounds like such a lovely place with wonderful scenery. Just found out that the annual motorcycle rally is held there. Still, I had heard nothing of the place before then lol. I hope that you will get to visit soon 🙂

I have just looked up Nordic prisons and its crazy. They do look like college dorms. Prisons in Africa are part of the reason why I haven’t ventured into a life of crime yet lol. Seriously though, prisons here ain’t no joke.

I hope that you will enjoy this book if you get a chance to read it.

      1. Ha! That sounds like fun! And a good excuse to visit 😀

Love how you put that… the only reason, hehe 😀 We should move to Sweden and become mobsters so we can live in those lovely prisons 😀 /joke

    1. Thanks Yvo. I think the other twists and the prison narrative saved this one for me so guessing the villain’s identity so early ended up not affecting my experience with the story too much.

    1. That is one of the reasons why I kept turning pages until the end. I couldn’t wait to find out whether Natalie and her son got reunited. Thanks so much Meggy 🙂

  3. Ooo! This thriller sounds good. I probably wouldn’t be able to guess, or maybe I would. Doesn’t matter — this one is going on my book club list. We like to read thrillers together. Great review!
