In Keep You Safe by Rona Halsall, Natalie is trying to find her son, Harry. She has been in prison for years and lastly saw her son when he was just a few months old. Keeping him away is her estranged husband, Tom, and some bad people chasing her.
This story is narrated through alternating timelines. My favorite timeline was the one following Natalie’s arrest and imprisonment. I was curious about her crimes. I am always intrigued by stories set in prison so her incarceration also interested me. This prison was quite different though. It kinda sounded like an okay place, well apart from being locked down and the not so nice inmates. The present timeline follows Natalie as she searches for her son. There were quite a number of tense moments especially involving Natalie being stalked.
This was a good read and I enjoyed Rona’s writing. Having read many thrillers before, I quickly guessed the identity of the baddie hence the reveal wasn’t surprising. However, I didn’t predict their motives or a number of the other twists in the story. There were also a few chilling chapters that were narrated by a mysterious character. These were intense and I found myself looking forward to them.
Through this story, I also discovered the Isle of Man. I had never heard of this place before. Not even in passing or in a movie. It provided an interesting setting for this thriller. The Coastal location also added more tension to some of the scenes. This was an interesting, well-written thriller with a unique setting.

It really is. I don’t know how I have never even heard of it before this book. Most thrillers set in the UK talk of Cornwall when using island locations. Isle of Man was unique. Thank you, Nikola 🙂

I Googled Isle of Man after reading the book. Its between England and Ireland, small kingdom with about 80,000 citizens, the people are called Manx. I think its a really interesting place and it definitely was a great location for this thriller. Thanks Jennifer 🙂

Ha! A pleasant prison! I think i remember reading somewhere about prisons in the Nordic countries and how they are not totally awful places and they actually try to make the inmates feel good etc…
This story sounds pretty cool. I think it’s interesting to see what happens after someone is released from prison and how their life might have fallen apart while they were in.
I’m also planning to the Isle of Man since forever, but so far have not managed to get there. At least i could take a fictional trip there 😀

I have just looked up Nordic prisons and its crazy. They do look like college dorms. Prisons in Africa are part of the reason why I haven’t ventured into a life of crime yet lol. Seriously though, prisons here ain’t no joke.
