Review: Closer by K. L. Slater

CloserI know my daughter better than I know myself and if there’s one thing I know for sure at this moment: it’s that Maisie is not ok.

My ex-husband Shaun and I are still friends.
We would do anything for our beautiful little girl, Maisie.
But now Shaun has moved in with Joanne and suddenly, Maisie has a brand new family.
And there’s something not quite right about it…I know Joanne isn’t everything she says she is. Yet no-one will listen.
I need to discover what she’s hiding.
Because if I don’t, my daughter will be in terrible danger.

Review

K. L. Slater is one of my favorite authors. I have read all her books and I am glad to report that they are all fab reads. Closer is her latest title and Slater has done it again! What a twisty, compulsive read!

The story begins with Shaun and Emma at the end of their marriage. The two are separated but still good friends. They share the common goal of wanting to do what’s best for their little girl, Maisie. However, things start changing when Shaun meets Joanne.

Emma and Maisie were my favorite characters in the story. I was rooting for them and I hoped things would work out for them. I also enjoyed their narratives the most. Maisie’s development through the chapters really broke my heart though. I wanted to find out the identity of the person who was stealing her joy and punch or yell at them or something.

The author did a fantastic job in developing the characters and I also enjoyed the mystery bit of this story. I couldn’t really guess who the villain was.  In the beginning, I thought their identity was pretty obvious but boy was I wrong!

Although I enjoyed reading this title, I really didn’t like the ending. It wasn’t a bad ending, no far from it. It was quite twisty and unpredictable. However, it just didn’t bring me any joy. I like it when things are wrapped up neatly and the conflicts are resolved. In this case, I was left turning pages, trying to see whether there was an additional chapter.

As always, the author managed to create characters that got under my skin and a story that won’t be easy to forget!  I recommend this title to fans of psychological thrillers. As a matter of fact, just read all books by K. L. Slater.

  1. Oooh, i think i have one book by this author… This defo sounds right up my alley. Once i’m off my psycho-thriller ban i shall check it out 🙂

    1. Hey Norrie, glad that you intend to check this one out once your ban is over. Slater has some really great psych thrillers so I definitely recommend her books for when you start reading the genre again 

    1. Thanks Inge. I do like happy endings or at least having all conflicts resolved but you are right about this one. It was realistic and definitely quite memorable. I am still thinking about the events that occurred at the end 🙂

  2. Wonderful review, Diana! It sounds like the ending was too abrupt? I wonder why authors make that choice sometimes? It’s terrific that you still enjoyed the read overall. I have meant to try this author. Do you have a favorite from her?

    1. Hey Jennifer, this one wasn’t abrupt. It was done well, only that I prefer happy endings 🙂 Another blogger described it perfectly as bold and brutal 🙂

Thank you. I think my favorite one by her is Blink 🙂

  3. Great review, Diana! I have this one! I wish the ending was a bit better for me. You do have me curious about it!

    1. Thank you, i really think that you will enjoy it. As much as I didn’t like the ending, its the part that I am still thinking about it. It definitely was bold and memorable. I hope that you will like it 🙂

  4. Wasn’t that ending cruel! I wrote that in my review as well that I’m posting tomorrow, I kept turning the pages thinking there was more??? Twisted but man makes your imagination go crazy!

  5. Great review Diana! I know what you mean about the end but I think she just wanted to keep messing with our heads even after we’re done this time. LOL

    1. haha, I agree Carrie and she successfully did that because I can’t stop thinking about the ending and wondering what happened to the characters. I am glad that we both enjoyed this one though.Thank you 🙂

  6. Nice review, Diana. Sorry the joyless ending didn’t work for you. 😔
I have an audiobook by K.L. Slater called The Mistake. I look forward to listening in the future. ☺️

    1. I hope that you will enjoy The Mistake as much as I did. Her books are really good but yeah, she got me with this one’s ending. As Carrie in the above comment mentioned, she might have wanted to mess with readers with that conclusion and she certainly did 🙂 Thanks Laurie.

    1. Hey Laila, yeah I usually don’t like that. However, a few days after reading this book and thinking about it, I have to admit that it was the best way to end this story because it made it even more memorable 🙂

  7. Wonderful review Diana. I love stories where I keep thinking and wondering about the characters long after I have finished the book. I have not read any books by this author, but need to remedy that.

    1. Thanks Carla and yes, that is exactly how this story turned out to be. At first, I was upset about the ending but days later, I can now admit that it was brilliant. Its definitely one that I won’t forget any time soon.

I definitely recommend Slater’s books. My favorite one was Blink. This one is also great especially because of the surprising ending.

  8. Sounds like another good read. I think I’m okay with the thought that the story doesn’t end all nice and tidy, but I haven’t read the book myself so I could be wrong depending on how the author does it.

    1. The ending is brilliant. It is brutal but still works out well so don’t let that deter you from reading this book. Its a twisty, compulsive read and Slater handles it quite well. Thanks Raney 🙂

    1. Blink was quite memorable. The ending for this title is great but I do prefer happy endings but still, this worked out well for the story 🙂

  9. I have this on my kindle and now I can’t wait to get to it! She is also a favorite of mine! I’ve read all of her books except her debut!

    1. I think you will enjoy this one, Holly. Its one of her most memorable titles. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts about it, once you are done.

      1. I tried to get it on Audible and it was the only one of hers not available, but I do have it on my kindle ❤
