Review
I have had this book on my TBR for over a month and now that I have read it, I wish I had gotten to it sooner. Chosen Child by Linda Huber is a fast paced psychological thriller that had me trying to guess how events would unravel right from the beginning of the story. At the start, there is a couple in the process of adopting a child. There is a woman involved in events that end up with her husband missing. At first, is not so clear how the two couples are connected. I also noted that each chapter had a date on its header but the significance became clearer as the narrative progresses.
The twists in this book start right in the first few pages. It becomes perceptible that things are not exactly as they seem. The cracks start to appear and soon things fall apart rapidly. At this point the connection between the two couples becomes apparent and just then disaster strikes completely throwing everything into havoc.
The main characters in this book include Ella mentioned in the blurb. It was easy to sympathize with her from the first page when we learn about her desire to have a child. Other characters include Amanda, Soraya and the men. I can’t really say much about the characters because I don’t want to post any spoilers. I’ll just say that most of the characters in the book are unlikeable but this character flaw is what makes the book much more interesting. In addition, Linda did a great job at creating complex characters. The kind of characters that you hate in one chapter, sympathize with in the next before hating them again. My favorite character of course was Jaden!
Linda Huber is a masterful storyteller. I liked how she pulled everything together. The narrative starts with two different stories but eventually like a jigsaw puzzle, everything starts coming together. I had so many Aha moments when the puzzle was completed and past events started making sense. The tension is palatable; it kept me glued to the narrative until the end.
My only issue with this book was the ending. There is really nothing bad about it but I wish there was more in the wrap-up. I like stories that end with the conflicts being resolved so although this wasn’t a major issue it left me feeling as if some pages were missing at the end.
Chosen Child by Linda Huber is a book about murder, secrets, lust, deception and families torn apart. It is that kind of book that will have you turning the pages frantically as you search for answers. This is my first book by the author and it definitely won’t be the last one. This book is dark and intriguing at the same time. It has the perfect mix for psychological thrillers. I recommend it to all fans of this genre.
